COMING TOGETHER
TO PRESERVE

OUR PLANET

PLANET

AN APPETITE FOR A HEALTHIER PLANET.

There's only one home. Earth. And it's our mission to protect it. So, KFC is aiming to make its operations have a net-positive impact on our planet by 2050. We are reducing single-use plastic for our consumer packaging in our restaurants, improving our sourcing and waste management, and focusing on solving environmental challenges across our supply chain.

Because the footprint we leave behind should be filled with bucketloads of good so that others may follow.

CONTRIBUTING TO A MORESUSTAINABLE ENVIRONMENT

FROM THE FARM STRAIGHT TO OUR STORES.

We're proud to source all our chickens locally, from farms that supply your favourite premium retailers.

Chicken quality and welfare

CHICKEN QUALITY & WELFARE: RAISED RESPONSIBLY

  • As one of Africa's largest buyers of chicken, we maintain strict controls on animal welfare, guided by our global Yum! Raised Responsibly framework to drive continuous improvement in humane care.
  • Our chicken meets global animal welfare standards, complies with all local legislation, and supports long-term sustainability and supply chain resilience.

HALAAL CERTIFIED INGREDIENTS

  • All our poultry and ingredients are sourced from Halaal-accredited suppliers.
  • We never compromise on quality or finger-lickin' good taste.

ONGOING AUDITS FOR CONSISTENT QUALITY

  • Over 1,200 KFC restaurants in South Africa undergo independent audits throughout the year.
  • Audits ensure health and safety procedures are followed and that we consistently deliver the taste our customers love.

After all, it is our responsibility to ensure that the quality of food is as good as its taste.

A CIRCULAR ECONOMY

SUSTAINABILITY AT OUR CORE

We're committed to a future that's sustainable and full of good—one where we grow as a society without depleting natural resources. Our goal is to:
  • Eliminate waste and pollution
  • Recycle products and materials
  • Replenish the environment

A BIG CHALLENGE, BUT WE'RE UP FOR IT

With over 1,200 restaurants nationwide and more than 500 in the rest of Sub-Saharan Africa, rolling out a circular economy is no small task. However, we've already made lasting change.

DRIVING CHANGE TOGETHER

We're working closely with partners to:
  • Shift to more sustainable materials
  • Eliminate unnecessary packaging
  • Improve recovery and recycling systems
A circular economy

SHIFTING TO MORE SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS

PRACTICAL CHANGES THAT CUT WASTE AND HELP PROTECT OUR PLANET.

July 2019

In an effort to minimise our environmental footprint, we transitioned from single-use plastic straws to eco-friendly paper straws in our restaurants. This switch has led to a substantial reduction in single-use plastic, decreasing usage from 1,300 tons to 700 tons since 2019. Additionally, we have localised the production of paper straws. By manufacturing them closer to our restaurants, we have reduced transportation-related pollution and provided support to the local economy.

April 2026

Through the introduction of paper-based gravy and coleslaw bowls, we have achieved a substantial decrease in our annual single-use plastic consumption. This initiative has resulted in a remarkable 46% reduction in plastic usage, reinforcing our commitment to minimising environmental impact and advancing our sustainability goals.

KFC global sustainable packaging

Our packaging suppliers are committed to procuring fibre-based packaging that is responsibly sourced. The paper for these bowls is sustainably sourced from responsibly managed PEFC certified forests. Look for the PEFC logo on the bowls with our supplier's licence number.

We are always looking at ways to reduce carbon emissions across our whole value chain as well as creating various circular economies within our restaurants, for example, by converting used cooking oil into bio-diesel, channelling back of house waste away from landfills and into the recycling waste stream while using recycled cardboard to produce some of our consumer packaging e.g. cans, boxes and cartons.

YOU SEE, WE BELIEVE THAT EVERYONE - OUR CUSTOMERS, SUPPLIERS, AND OUR ORGANISATION CAN COME TOGETHER TO PRESERVE OUR PLANET AND LEAVE A FINGER LICKIN' GOOD FUTURE FOR GENERATIONS TO COME.
